When I moved to the DC area in 1978, I quickly bought a "ten speed"and discovered Rock Creek Park. Today it still remains my favorite place to bike, especially now that the Capital Crescent Trail makes it loopable. On weekends, much of Beach Drive through Rock Creek is closed to cars and by using the Capital Crescent you can create a 28 mile loop that passes through both Georgetown and Bethesda - both great places to get something to eat or to observe the local flora and fauna. By starting further north on Beach Drive in Maryland you can extend the total distance up to about 50 miles in total. There is a bit of hard pack dirt riding as you pass through the middle of Columbia Country Club, but most of the ride is nice surface pavement with views galore.
So, when Rickeeee said he was going to drive down to the DC area for work and would bring his bike, I quickly suggested we do the Rock Creek/Capital Crescent loop - so we did. Most of Rick's recent biking has been limited to the Old and Smelly/Scrotum bike trail in Columbus - doing early morning 8 mile rides that are nearly totally flat - so this would be a step up in difficulty for him but an easy ride for me after recently doing the 65 mile Cumberland Valley Metric Century. Rick rides a Trek 520, similar but newer than mine - a much better choice than the skinny tire racing bike he used to have.
We started out near Kensington and did a bit more of road riding than planned, as the Rock Creek bike path had some bridge reconstruction going on. The closed-to-cars sections of Beach Drive are just a blast to ride on, though there were lots of joggers and marathoners in training clogging up the road. As we went by the National Zoo, a passing group of hot MILFs leaped on Ricky and dragged him off his bike. They appeared to be special needs type women, because (1) they were all wearing helmets and (2) they chose Rick instead of me.
I pulled Ricky off of them them off of Ricky and we continued on our way. We stopped at Georgetown Harbor to enjoy the view, had a bagel in Bethesda, a knish in Kensington and a Chimichanga in Chevy Chase, chasing it down with Dr. Pepper in Derwood. We both only gained 7 pounds on this 31 mile ride. Good times, good times - though Rick later wussed out on a BNO night, instead choosing to have dinner with his seester, sheesh.
