Animals often know about earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, cans of dog/cat food opening, etc. long before humans become aware of these things. It is becoming increasingly clear that animals are trying to warn us about the coming ice age - that chipmunk to the left there flung himself (or herself) 3 feet in the air in a desperate attempt to break into our nicely heated living room. The temperature had dropped precipitously that day and I'm sure there was a gaggle of other animals in the woods waiting to see if Chip's (or Dale's) daring raid on warmth would succeed.
Luckily, I had installed outdoor speakers in our screened porch and I can play Internet tunes and MP3s outdoors. All I had to do was crank up one particular song and the crisis was averted. Once the little rodent scurried away, not a single deer/moose/elk/snake/unicorn/hedgehog tried to scale our walls to escape the chilling cold that is just a precursor of Arctic-like conditions that will surely hit us in the next few months - my prediction is no later than December.
